In 2017 we celebrated International Day of the Girl 2017 by partnering up with two of our favourite local organisations, Norwich Millennium Library and Cinema City.
We were delighted to have hosted a film screening of the wonderful film Girlhood (Bandes de Filles) followed by a Q+A with activist Dolly Ogunrinde.
Tickets were available here.
About the film:
Dropping out of school, teenager Marieme (Touré) hooks up with three other girls in a loose-knit gang. Soon they are embarking on a spree of minor theft, drug-dealing and spirited high jinks in and beyond the soulless Parisian suburb where they all live. For them it’s all about identity, freedom and youthful empowerment
Dolly Ogunrinde is a feminist and activist. She was the former Women’s Officer at the University of East Anglia where she was awarded the Inspirational Woman Student of the year award by the National Union of Students. Now she currently works with underprivileged young people in South London as well as campaigns with Sisters Uncut.
We also paired up with the library hosting a special storytime for younger children at 10.30am, featuring stories with strong female characters. Storytime was aimed at children six and under.
Participants also had the chance to add words and pictures to our ‘Inspirational Women’ graffiti wall – so tell us all about women who have inspired you in your life! This is open to all and will be located on the ground floor of the main library!
We were delighted to have taken over the youth space at Open on Bank Plain in Norwich as part of our celebrations of International Day of the Girl 2016! This was our fourth year and we were really excited to be hosting a series of FREE events for people of all ages and genders.
